Ways to distinguish yourself #157 – Pay for ideas

By Rajesh Setty on Sun 06 Aug 2006, 12:58 AM - 2 Comments

One of your close friends comes up with an idea that has the possibility of making a big impact on your future – may be in terms of money, career or any other kind of success. You may take that idea and do something about it or you may decide to pass on it. Whatever you do with the idea, one thing is clear, you have to do something to take care of your friend who brought that idea – the gift.

One way to look at it is to think that as a friend it was your friend’s “duty” to come up with ideas to help you. The other way to look at this is to genuinely thank your friend for the gift and reciprocate in some way. How about stretching this a little bit? Assume for a minute that you will “pay” (don’t get worried yet) for all good ideas that come your way. Why should ideas be free? Someone spent the time to think about you and crafted a scenario that might benefit you. If they spent any time, there is a cost associated with it. Why not bear a part of the cost?

A few years ago, one of my teachers taught me to “pay” for ideas. The world has never been the same once I started putting that into practice. What you “pay” for an idea really depends on two things – how good the idea is and what you can afford to pay at that time. If the idea was very valuable but you can’t afford to pay that value right now, how about recording an imaginary “I Owe You” for the difference and make it a point to settle it somewhere in the future?

Once you establish this appraoch in your life, there are a number of side-benefits. These side-benefits alone can cover the investments you will make by paying for ideas. Here are some of those side-benefits

a) You will start respecting people with ideas – meaning you will attract more people with good ideas into your life

b) You will give more attention to ideas – otherwise how can you really evaluate which ideas are good?

c) You will stop expecting free rides

d) You will make your friends feel more valuable

and many more..

By the way, the reciprocation need not be in terms of money. In fact, you might offend some friends if you try to pay them literally. Do whatever is appropriate for that particular case. There is no right or wrong practice – only some practices are powerful and some are not. You make the choice!

Unveiling Suggestica; Thanks to everyone who played a part!

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 04 Aug 2006, 7:34 AM - 6 Comments

The day has come. Finally. What started off as a simple idea took on a
“larger than life” size over the last few months. Vijay and I are
blessed to be surrounded by so many bright people that made it happen.
A project of this magnitude cannot be brought to life without the
involvement of MANY bright people.

Vijay and I want to
acknowledge the key people. With our bird brains, we are sure that we
will leave a few names out and we will kick ourselves later. If we have
left out your name, please note that it is because of our bird brains
and nothing else.

1. Compassites
- The company that took the idea and made it a reality. These people
are not vendors. They are more like partners. They can take an idea
(one liner) and convert that into a product. So many people from the
company were involved in the product at some time or the other.

Thanks
to Naveen Lakkur, Ramesh Rajamani, Rajesh Kannan, Nimisha Mohandas,
Hareesh, Narayanan, Sowmya, Prashant, Nalini, Prakash, Preethi, Anand,
Sumanth, Parinitha, Naveen Kumar and Dhananjai.

2. Karthik Sundaram at Purplepatch Services – First, for the logo and then for all the support througout.

3. Advisors – Stan Leopard, Sterling Lanier, Paul D’Souza and Yakov Soloveychik.

4. iVistasolutions – Designed the look and feel for the project

5. Feedback for the pre-release version – Erik Hansen, Bren Connelly, Phil Gerbyshak, Mike Sansome, Richard Banfield, Phil Lee, Harsha Raghavan, Ramit Sethi, Bill Sherman, Dwayne Melancon, John Keegan, John Brothers, Stephen Hopson, Wayne Turmel, Alan Lattanner, Mike Beck, Ravi Char, Guru Yellapur, Peggy McColl, Hanley Brite and Avinash Vaidya

6. Jeff Barr and Rajesh Kulkarni of Amazon.com for all the support

7. Investors – There are several of them. We will be announcing them soon.

8.
Well-wishers – Too many to list. Thanks to everyone of  you who sent us
a mail or called us to wish us good luck or just plain wanted the best
for Suggestica. Thank you.

The doors are now open. Welcome. Experience and enrich yourself through the suggestions at Suggestica!

The Paradox of Experience

By Rajesh Setty on Thu 03 Aug 2006, 10:09 AM - Leave Comment

Here is the paradox. We are always chasing experience and want to get it and show people that we have GOT IT. However, we are really unconfortable with the experience of experience.

Think about it. We want to try something new and gain experience. We try it. We fail – sometimes or many times. We think we are screwed up. Many of us give up. On the other hand, if it was a task that was a “no brainer” and we could get it in our first try, we are not happy either. It is VERY SIMPLE. We are better than that. We want more challenging experiences.

What if you show up everyday with an attitude to LEARN? Just learn. Whatever happens you decide to learn from it?

It’s a whole new world there and you are creating it first within yourself and then experiencing it. Of course, you can’t control everything that’s happening outside but you DO have control on what you are creating within your mind. Let us not forget that.

What could a meeting do – A brief story of Suggestica

By Rajesh Setty on Thu 03 Aug 2006, 9:59 AM - 4 Comments

Regular readers of this blog may be wondering whether I have become lazy as there are not many posts on the blog. I have not been lazy – in fact, I have been busy preparing for the launch of a new venture that I am involved with called Suggestica.

A brief story of the genesis of Suggestica – A few months ago, I was speaking at a conference on the topic of chasing dreams. At the end of the meeting, a young man came to me and asked if I had three minutes to listen to a pitch. I was happy to give him the three minutes and I must say that I am glad I did. Vijay had the sparkle in his eyes – the same sparkle that any budding entrepreneur who is about to change the world would have. Granted, he had not built companies before but I could see the fire in his belly. The pitch wasn’t perfect but I could see that he was open to listening for feedback and showed willingness to change. Over the next few weeks, we built a relationship – a very strong relationship. I just discovered that Vijay was willing to do whatever it takes to make this happen. It has been a great partnership so far and long story short – Friday morning 8am PST is the launch of this exciting service.

Did I tell you that my first few novels were spy thrillers? I truly want to tell you what Suggestica is all about. But I have promised to the team that I won’t – until the launch on Friday. So, please bear with me and wish us the very best.

The beta will be open to public on Friday 8am PST and I do hope that you will visit the site and provide your comments
