Quotes worth recording – John Gardner

By Rajesh Setty on Thu 09 Nov 2006, 10:05 AM - 1 Comment

Once you read this, you will see that it is obvious. Most of the times, we are blind to things that are close to us.

Next time, when you get some “real” feedback from someone that cares for you, resist the temptation to defend and start learning.

“Pity the leader caught between unloving critics and uncritical lovers”

How would you handle him?

By Rajesh Setty on Wed 08 Nov 2006, 9:36 PM - 2 Comments

Here is a scenario to consider:

Imagine you are living with a person who is constantly talking carp. Either he is whining or he is complaining. He is constantly blaming someone for something. When he can’t blame someone he will pick the climate, economy, government, religion or something like that. From his constant bickering, he will make you feel miserable. Not only that, he will repeat the same nonsense endlessly for a number of weeks or months or even years. He will remember stupid things that happened decades ago and remind you of the same. Every now and then he will make you feel bad about yourself or your situation.

How would you handle such a person? Let me ask you a more specific question – “If you have no choice but to live with this person throughout your life, how would you handle him?”

I know. I know. You are all smart and by now you would have figured out what I am talking about.

To be clear – I am talking about a global illness called “negative self-talk.” Engaging in “negative self-talk” is costly and the returns are abyssmal. The only thing that provides you is a license to postpone positive action or any action for that matter. You can now keep drifting away in your life quoting that you are just not in a mood to do anything of significance.

So, how do you solve the problem? It may be simpler than you think. Once you have identified this problem, you should be VERY glad that you are in full control of the problem. You have to be – you are the talker and you are the listener. Don’t you think it’s cool? You have a choose either of the solutions below:

(a) you can stop talking crap

or

(b) you can stop listening to crap

Pick either of the above and you will be cured. You are very important in your life to be bombarded with crap.

All the best!

Too many good books to choose is still a problem; Solution: Launching MySuggestica

By Rajesh Setty on Wed 08 Nov 2006, 6:47 AM - Leave Comment

When Vijay and I launched Suggestica, we anticipated that very soon we will create the same problem that we set out to solve. We wanted to provide a solution to the choice overload problem but once we started adding more and more “Trusted Authorities” to the list, we ended up creating our own choice overload. We are overwhelmed with the positive response to the site but too many people asked us when we will provide an ability filter out the content that they want to get.

Today is that day. We are launching “My Suggestica” portal on Suggestica. Upon registering on the site, you can choose the “Trusted Authorities” and/or Topics (sorry tags – I forget that we have to ALWAYS use web 2.0 terminology ;) ) and save them in your preferences. You will only see suggestions from these Trusted Authorities and/or topics everytime you login.

Please register on the site try this out and let us know your feedback.

Thank you.

PS: So many of you have asked us how we will get user participation. This is the first step towards getting user participation. Very shortly we will announce more features in relation to this. Thanks.

Looking at life differently..

By Rajesh Setty on Tue 07 Nov 2006, 11:48 PM - 2 Comments

Here is a scenario. You board a train with hundreds of others passengers. The train is heading towards Los Angeles. The obvious thing that will happen is that you will end up in Los Angeles with everyone else. Of course, what won’t happen is that you ALONE won’t reach Seattle magically. That seems logical. However, while people accept what I just said, in real life, they expect exactly the opposite. They follow the crowd and do exactly what everyone else is doing because it seems right. In their dreams, though, they want to reach a special destination because they are special. Go figure!

If you want to reach a special place in life, you have no option but to look at life differently and act differently!

Casanova said it beautifully – “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”

Have a nice morning there.

Some folks might argue that the Outer Game — Leverage, Likeability, Listen, Lead — can’t be learned, that what you’ll get is manipulation. How would you answer them?

and, here is my answer:

Ways to distinguish yourself #169 – Know when to be absent

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 03 Nov 2006, 9:21 PM - 1 Comment

Being present and being in the present are both very important. However, there are times when you are better off being absent or in other words, you will create more harm by being present. I will give you a few scenarios and you can add your own to the list:

1. When someone wants to be alone:
There are cases when someone really wants to be alone and spend time with himself or herself.

2. When someone wants to be with their family:
Unfortunately, family is an institution under constant threat because we are “always connected.” When someone wants to finally break away and get to spend some quality time with their family, it is better that you are absent physically and through the internet.

3. When someone wants to get an objective feedback about you:
If you are present, it no longer will be objective (most of the time) as people want to be “nice” to you. Sometimes you’d rather want people to be honest and not nice. By you being not there, people who want to get critical feedback about you can get their job done more easily.

4. When you are “truly” not invited:
Sounds too obvious but that does not negate the validity of the scenario.

5. When you want sometime to be alone:
Sometimes it may be that you want to be alone to recharge your batteries or reflect on something. So please be alone and be absent from other places. That way you won’t annoy other people.

Of course, I am sure you will have your own scenarios to add to this list.

Good luck and have a great weekend.
