Well I first heard a version of this story in a book (fiction) by Douglas Adams "So long and thanks for all the fish" published in 1984 (http://www.amazon.com/So-Long-Thanks-All-Fish/dp/0345391837/). It was a railway station, not an airport and it was two men but clearly the same story.
I suspect therefore that everyone else was copying that one (unless someone has an earlier reference than 1984).

This is a story that Rick Reynolds told in his stand-up/solo humor show, "Only the Truth is Funny."

He was speaking about his own life .. yet that story was so captivating I remember it and have told it to others ...and that show was in 1993. The show had a long run here in S.F. yet did not do well on Broadway, as I recall.

I thought it was original, smart, funny and poignant. He moved to Petaluma, launched a second show, was going to have a TV show, got divorced... and disappeared from the performance world it seems.

Recently, my wife borrowed a telugu movie (i think) video from a nearest library. Noticed the exact instance with a pack of potato chips while sitting on a boat, in that movie.

A good story - about controlling oneself.
