I want three blankets

By Rajesh Setty on Mon 03 Dec 2007, 2:13 PM - 5 Comments

The morning flight to Chicago was cold. May be they were just preparing us for the weather in Chicago. Few minutes into the air, people were requesting blankets to cover themselves.

I saw a lady (who was sitting alone) get up and take three blankets. Soon there were no blankets left. Fortunately, the flight was not full and I don’t think it was a problem.

Imagine a scenario where you wanted a blanket and it was not available anymore. You don’t have a blanket but someone has three. What would you do?

My answer: Nothing

You can’t change the world on these things. You don’t expect everyone will play a fair game. It is expected that everyone takes only one blanket so that everyone has a chance to get one. However, there is no such rule and some people will use that for their advantage. Blaming them won’t help. Since you can’t change them and the only person that you have FULL (sort of) control to change is yourself, the best option is to think ahead and pick up a blanket (only one, please) for yourself.

hehe – i have noticed the same thing happened while I was on plane a few months ago. This should probably be one of the (safety) instructions that the crew gives while we board the plane. And also put the label on blanket compartment to pick only one.
Agreed, we can’t change others, at least thore would be specific messages so people can realize at least at that minute.

There could be a simple solution. Put blankets under every seat (1 or 2) – just like emergency oxygen mask, head-pillow.

By rule, people would discipline themselves not to take extra things
And, it should work.

The solution:
1) You go to the lady and take three blankets from her.
2) When she begins to scream you give her back one blanket and say that it is not fair to take three blankets.
In this way the lady learnes her lesson and you have two blankets as a reward.

I guess that the lady wouldn’t have taken more than one blanket if the flight looked full. Or she might have been really (really) feeling sick/cold and needed three blankets. A healthy person could have done ok without a blanket.

I would have talked to attendent to do something about this ‘cold situation’ in plane.

Thank you so much for all your comments.

@Ram, good idea although the airlines may not be interested in “fixing” this issue as it is not a “common” issue.

@Kalpesh – same as above

@TesTeq – your response made me smile

@virk – Possibly. There is no way to know. But I agree with you that it might be a possibility.

Cheers,
Raj
