The Missing Piece

I was at a writers’ conference earlier this week. The moderator asked for people to list their expectations from the conference. The expectations ranged from wanting to sell more books to building a good network. What was strikingly missing was that nobody said “I want to become a better writer”.

It is interesting, most people and most of the time, look for the return than think of what it takes to get there although it is good to keep the end in mind (book sales/profitability) and work towards it. unless the conference was geared towards the profitability or if the attendees were mostly publishing companies and not individual writers. -just a thought from this post.

Raj – While sitting next to you at the conference, I was struck by the same thought: “We’re all business authors who have high expectations of this conference, yet those expectations seem to be almost entirely about publicity and money.” Nothing wrong with that (after all, most of us have already written the first book), but it’s an interesting dose of “business reality”.

I was reminded of when I was a painting student back in university. One day our painting professor invited the class to lunch. We had a wonderful chat. She said how much she enjoyed spending time with students because we loved to talk about art, while every time she went out with her art teaching colleagues, all they talked about was money.

What goes around, I suppose…
