One more way to make Google rich!

By Rajesh Setty on Mon 31 Mar 2008, 3:10 PM - 2 Comments

This is a two-step process

1. Start a Google Adwords Camapign

Ex: Buy keyword like “Los Altos Coffee”

los_altos_coffee1.jpg

2. Don’t create a website. You can just put an “Under Construction” message

los_altos_coffee2.jpg

I thought something went wrong and clicked the same link twice.

Did my part to help Google!

Quotes worth recording – Gertrude Stein

By Rajesh Setty on Mon 31 Mar 2008, 8:23 AM - 1 Comment

If I had just understood this quote and internalized it when I started my first company almost a decade ago, I would have had a more peaceful “first-time entrepreneur” experience.

Enjoy the quote and have a great week ahead!

“It is awfully important to know what is and what is not your business”

People and Things

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 21 Mar 2008, 3:00 PM - 4 Comments

Yesterday Hari (from Jiffle) mentioned about an email he received with a set of quotes. One quote really caught his attention. The quote is simple and profound

“People are meant to be loved and things are meant to be used. But unfortunately, people are being used and things are being loved”

Have a great weekend!

The Paradox of Learning (example of Time Management)

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 21 Mar 2008, 7:08 AM - 2 Comments

Yesterday I had dinner with three very smart people. One of them is Hanley Brite. During our talk, the topic moved to learning and Hanley explained a learning paradox taking the example of time management.

Hanley said:

The paradox of learning is beautifully explained in the context of time management. The people who attend a time management course are exactly those people who “find” the time to attend the time management course and hence may not really need that course. And, on the other hand, people who don’t attend a time management course can’t find the time to attend one and may be those are the ones that really need the time management course

Of course, this learning paradox exists beyond the time management domain.

Think about it – What is that you something that you need to get good at TODAY but you really don’t have the TIME to get good at it?

How do I become better at blogging?

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 21 Mar 2008, 6:52 AM - 1 Comment

One common question that I get asked is

How do I become better at blogging?

My answer is typically the following. Please change the question to the following and that in itself will provide the answer. So the reframed question is:

How do I become better?

The first question is not a bad one but it focuses on tactics. Even the best tactics will only work in the short-term because once employed, other smart people can observe them and incorporate them in their own work – eliminating your competitive advantage (if any).

The second question focuses on building your identity in the long-term. Someone cannot mimic or copy your identity in a heart-beat. They can copy a tactic but not an identity.

So the question again:

How do I become better?

Answer this sincerely and the blogging question will take care of itself.

If you really need some tactics though, they are available on the Internet (for Free). Here is a quick collection of them:

Exciting things are happening for us at Jiffle. The service was developed over 18 months. We are in version 3.1.3 now – most of the changes implemented in the last two versions are based on extensive feedback from our customers.

Jiffle’s mission is to help people schedule meetings. Currently our focus is only on 1-1 meetings. Our research shows that a significant number of the meetings are between two parties. There may be more than 2 people in the meeting but large majority of the meetings are between two parties.

Hari and I have one goal for Jiffle: To make it easy for our client’s customers to have the most convenient way to schedule meetings with our clients.

We have created the following tutorials and quick reference guides to assist you.

1. Sharing your calendar in emails : View Tutorial or Download Quick Reference Guide

2. Publish your calendar on your website : View Tutorial or Download Quick Reference Guide

3. Using Jiffle with WebEx : View Tutorial or Download Quick Reference Guide

There are more announcements coming from Jiffle soon (probably early April).

Will keep you posted.

Those who are using Jiffle, Hari and I thank you from the bottom of our heart. Those who are not, please give us a try.

Thank you.

Pre-Entrepreneurship “Crash” Course

By Rajesh Setty on Sat 15 Mar 2008, 7:02 AM - 4 Comments

That is the topic of my talk at the event organized by IIT Delhi, Entrepreneurship Support Program

Here are the details

Location: Synopsys, 455 N. Mary Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA
Date: Wednesday March 26th
Mixer: 6.00 pm to 6.30pm
Presentation: Rajesh Setty 6.30pm – 7.30pm
Q&A/Discussion: 7.30pm – 8.30pm
Fee: $15.00
Contacts: Rahul Kapoor (www.rahulkapoor.net) or
Sanjiv Goyal (sanjiv.goyal@droisys.com)

More info at: IIT Delhi Wiki

I am supporter of Entrepreneurship Support Program (ESP) and I continue to maintain my rule of speaking for free for Non-profit groups that are doing exciting work.

Background for my presentation:

On a lighter note, if there is a “crash course” on Pre-Entrepreneurship, there is a high probability that it can only lead to someone on a “crash” course :)

All entrepreneurs need a boost in their capacity to execute with minimum resources. First-time entrepreneurs need a double shot of the same. My goal in the one hour is to highlight how a wannabe entrepreneur can prepare to be on the “other side” of the fence. What can one do today when he or she is “not an entrepreneur” to build that additional capacity that will come in handy when he or she really becomes an entrepreneur.

While I believe that “what you do as an entrepreneur” is important for you to succeed, what is more important is “what you do as you lead up to be an entrepreneur“. The talk will focus on some parts of what you can do in preparation for being an entrepreneur.

If you are already an entrepreneur, the topics I will be covering will provide a refresher course on items that you should have been engaged but you might have missed because you had no time :)

Look forward to meeting some of you there.
