Advice for Tough Times – From Tom Peters Times UK

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 05 Dec 2008, 6:26 PM - Leave Comment

Madeleine McGrath at Tom Peters Company UK has a special edition of Tom Peters Times titled “Advice for Tough Times”

You can read it the entire edition here:
Tom Peters Times: Advice for Tough Times

My upcoming book Upbeat is featured there under the section “Demeanor.” Here is what Madeleine says about the book:

As we watch the media pundits and commentators pick holes in the world’s politicians’ brave attempts to address the current economic mess, a new book from one of Tom’s Cool Friends, Raj Setty, is a welcome ray of light. The book’s title is Upbeat, and it contains many gems of inspiration to encourage a positive attitude during tough times. At the outset, Raj sounds off at the insidious impact that negative conversations have on your life. If every conversation that you have begins with a depressing catalogue of doom and gloom, not only are you setting a depressing tone, you are also wasting that time. In that context, banning gloomy conversations about things over which you have no control becomes an immensely sensible, positive resolution. Think about it!

Thank you Madeleine.

The book will be out in March 2009. Please sign up for the mailing list here for the updates on the book and some other special goodies.

A fundamental law – Give more and you will get more

By Rajesh Setty on Tue 02 Dec 2008, 3:22 PM - Leave Comment

It’s been two weeks since I announced that I was making “Beyond Code” (foreword by Tom Peters) available for FREE.

Looking at the download numbers, I was happy that the book has reached WAY more people than before.

I made a decision to give away the book for FREE as part of a thanksgiving gesture but did not realize (at that time) that it will have so many positive side-effects.

First, several times in the last few days, the book was on the Amazon Top 100 list in the motivational section (images below) – which means that there are more people who are buying the book.

Buying the book was optional. So I am grateful for all this support. It is a pleasant surprise for sure.

You can download the complete book here:
Beyond Code (foreword by Tom Peters) – Complete Version

Have a great week ahead.

Sad and shocked; My prayers are with families of those that lost their lives in Mumbai today

By Rajesh Setty on Wed 26 Nov 2008, 8:24 PM - 2 Comments

The terrorist attacks in Bombay have left me sad and shocked. 11 places attacked almost simultaneously, over 100 people killed and over 1000 people injured.

It is sad that some people think “killing innocent people” will solve their problems or make a statement of some sort.

The world is facing unprecedented problems today -  This is a time that all of us have to come together to face the collective threats (Poverty, Global Warming, Healthcare, Economy etc.) in front of us.

How will have the capacity to fight the bigger threats if we are busy fighting amongst ourselves?

My prayers are with families of more than hundred people who lost their lives for no fault of theirs.

God Bless!

Professional Services Maturity Model – Request for participation

By Rajesh Setty on Sun 23 Nov 2008, 4:36 PM - Leave Comment

If you are running a Professional Services Firm or a PS Division, you might be interested in this.

My friends Jeanne Urich and David Hofferberth at Service Performance Insight published “The New Professional Services Maturity Model — A Roadmap to Achieving Professional Services Excellence”.  Both the maturity concepts and the benchmark have met with incredible success. Over 500 firms are now using the Service Maturity Model to benchmark their organizations and work toward optimization.  The 2008 PS Maturity Model has become the industry standard for professional service organizations.

In case you haven’t heard of “The Professional Service Maturity Model” I have attached a recent whitepaper describing the maturity model concepts and results.

Introducing the Service Maturity Model – White Paper (PDF)

Service Performance Insight is in the final stages of accepting participants for the upcoming PS Maturity Benchmark report which will be published in January, 2009.

You can find the survey questionnaire here

SPI Research PS Maturity Model Survey (XLS file)

If you complete the survey and return it by Monday, December 1st, you will receive a FREE copy of the entire 2009 benchmark report ($495 value).

SPI Research is now working on the report, which will be published in January, 2009.  To date, over 135 firms have participated in this year’s survey. They would like to reach 175 participants by the December 1st deadline.

If you know someone who runs a Professional Services Firm or a Division as they will benefit hugely from this report

Gradually…Then Suddenly

By Rajesh Setty on Thu 20 Nov 2008, 12:05 PM - 4 Comments

For those of you who have been following me for long know that Tom Peters has been one of my heroes for a long time. Tom was kind enough to  write the foreword for my book “Beyond Code“. As of today, I will be contributing regularly to the TomPeters.com blog.

My first entry talks about my perspective on what created this mess we are in and most important what we (knowledge workers) can do about it.

So here is the link to the column:

Thanksgiving Wishes – Please download the full version of “Beyond Code” FREE

By Rajesh Setty on Sun 16 Nov 2008, 7:37 PM - 27 Comments

This Thanksgiving I wanted to do something that is timely and meaningful. So I convinced my publishers that I will give away the full version of my book “Beyond Code” (foreword by Tom Peters) for free. Thanks to Kenzi Sugihara at Select Books, at this end of this post you will see a link to download the full version of the book for FREE.

Here is the background:

I have been talking about the “people problems” because of outsourcing for a while. Here are a few links from the past:

Jan 21, 2007: The dilemma for Bangalore software industry

May 05, 2007: If Bangalore really wants to be the Silicon Valley of India…

Aug 25, 2007: Over-compensated to death

I always believed that the best way to kill someone is to over-compensate him or her for mediocre work. The person won’t look for something better as the money is good. Mediocrity will make the person rusty and when the time comes to look for a job outside, the skills won’t be sufficient to land a job elsewhere. So basically the person is STUCK.

You can see the effects of problems with announcements of layoffs in several places in India.

A few years ago, I wrote “Beyond Code” to address the exact same problem. For a technology person to succeed, the coding skills are only a beginning. They are like an entry ticket to the park. One can’t rest with the coding skills alone. For long-term success, the person has to look “Beyond Code” – mostly related to the people side of things.

So, in “Beyond Code” you won’t see a piece of code (except on the cover of the American edition) – it’s all about what someone should do “beyond code” to succeed.

Today, you are welcome to download the “full version” of “Beyond Code” below. If you already own a hard copy, thank you and you may know someone who might need it. Please pass it along.

Beyond Code – full version – FREE (PDF, 3.8MB)

(you will see the download link on the left menu)

Happy Thanksgiving all of you!

Launching “Behind The Car” project

By Rajesh Setty on Thu 09 Oct 2008, 5:30 AM - 2 Comments

Background:

Today is Sumukh’s birthday. He is 10 years old. I have always wanted him to learn the basics of building a company. Of course, it will be odd to try and teach a ten year old kid about balance sheets and income statements without a context. So, the last few weeks, Sumukh and I have been thinking about building a business just to learn the basics of building a business.

Finally, we came up with a simple idea and started executing on it. That project is called “Behind The Car

What is Behind The Car?

Behind The Car is an ongoing community project where people from all over the world send in fun and interesting bumper stickers via email.

Starting today, you should be seeing bumper stickers posted (almost) everyday on the site. Some of these bumper stickers are funny, some are cool, some are interesting, some are boring and some are, well, we are still trying to figure them all out.

Why this project?

The goal of the project is for Sumukh to learn the basics of building a business. While we are passionate about the project, the goal is to share and learn more than anything else.

How can you participate?

If you find a fun, interesting or cool bumper sticker, please take a photo and send the same to “behindthecar at gmail dot com” and Sumukh will clean it up (remove the license plate information etc.) and post it with a link to your website.

Special Thanks

Lots of friends who are lending a helping hand to Sumukh and most importantly Cody McKibben at ThrillingDesign for patiently helping Sumukh with his project.

A Request

Please visit “Behind The Car” and help us spread the message.

If any of you are interested about the lessons learned throughout the project send me an email and I will add you to the list. I am asking Sumukh to document this journey and hope that it will be useful for others who might also be interested in such a journey.

We don’t know where this will go but would definitely welcome your support and good wishes.

Thank you.

The Fulcrum Effect – Services Industry Summit at Las Vegas – Oct 7, 2008

By Rajesh Setty on Wed 24 Sep 2008, 10:31 PM - Leave Comment

I am looking forward to the Services Industry Summit  Oct 6-8, 2008 at Las Vegas. I am the keynote speaker on the morning of Oct 7 and will be speaking on the topic called “The Fulcrum Effect

A quick overview of talk is here:

The Fulcrum Effect

LinkedIn wants us increase our contact count. Twitter wants us to communicate with 140 characters. iPhone and Blackberry want us to be always connected. World IS moving fast for sure. In the Professional Services world, the world seems to move a bit more faster.

However, skills required for long-term success (such as building a personal brand, building lasting relationships etc.) are built slowly and over a long period of time. The dilemma we face is to continue to invest in skills that provide results only after a long period of time when the world just wants us to move FAST.

Rajesh will highlight a few of the long-term skills we all need in our life and an approach to blend practicing these kills in the fast paced world of Professional Services.

The talk will include a few excerpts from my upcoming book

“BRANDTASTIC!”
Personal Branding 2.0

I am looking forward to meeting with the attendees who are all involved in leading Technology Professional Services Oraganizations.
