We would all be geniuses if we were just graded by the brilliant ideas we come up with. It’s just that we don’t know how to execute on all these brilliant ideas.
The Entrepreneur
It was the third time in four years. His idea was already implemented even before he could start working on it. Someone was stealing his ideas. A question from a long-time friend nailed it – “Do you know how many OTHER people had the same idea and didn’t execute?”

Requirements Analysis
Little Tommy asked Mom – “Where did I come from?”. Mom struggled for twenty minutes to explain things around sex. Tommy responded with a blank face – “This is a bit confusing. Johnny told me he is from Columbus, Ohio and I wanted to know where I came from…”

Networking
The conference pitch was compelling – “$400 to meet about 4000 people”. John signed up immediately and was looking forward to the networking event. The conference was great but not the networking. Ninety-five percent of attendees there wanted help badly and were only hunting for those five-percent who had help.

The Trend
John could not understand the reason for third failure in
a row. He had a blockbuster success during the dot-com
days so this was really puzzling. Finally, his mentor’s question
solved the mystery for him – “John, what was the real
reason for your success first time – You or the Trend?”

The Price
An experienced entrepreneur launched a company with a shoe-string budget.
The company was very successful. The entrepreneur got on a
speaking circuit explaining how easy it was to build a
company. What was not mentioned was the PRICE entrepreneur had
paid in the last two decades to build his identity.

Happiness
It was a good year for John. His hard work had handsomely paid off albeit with sacrifices on the family side. When he told his friend Bob that he had many reasons to be happy about the year, Bob asked – “Why do you need a reason to be happy?”

The Missing Piece
I was at a writers’ conference earlier this week. The moderator asked for people to list their expectations from the conference. The expectations ranged from wanting to sell more books to building a good network. What was strikingly missing was that nobody said “I want to become a better writer”.

The Sales Seminar
John was eager to learn to sell. The promise was compelling. $99 and a day with the gurus of real estate, John would be a better sales person. All the speakers were good. By the end of the day, John had purchased goods in excess of $1000. John was sold!

The Reality Show
They wanted to showcase the real life of someone looking for a job. The protagonist, John, was on the job hunt. Every week, the show highlighted John’s various attempts and failures. After fix months, John had still not found a job. There was no drama. The show was a flop.

The Startup
John never thought getting deals would be a problem for his new venture. He had a big network. Twenty meetings were setup in the first six weeks. Every meeting was good. Everyone wanted to know what John was doing. No one was bold enough to give him the first deal.
