Quought for the Day #22 – Keith Ferrazzi

By Rajesh Setty on Sat 30 Dec 2006, 10:41 AM - 2 Comments

Being passionate about building relationships, I was quickly attracted to the work of Keith Ferrazzi and have learnt a lot from him and his book in the last year. I am excited to present Keith’s contribution to the series.

Keith Ferrazzi is one of the rare individuals to discover the essential formula for making his way to the top through a powerful, balanced combination of marketing acumen and networking savvy. Both Forbes and Inc Magazines have designated him one of the world’s most “connected” individuals. Now, as Founder & CEO of Ferrazzi Greenlight, he provides market leaders with advanced strategic consulting and training services to increase company sales, and enhance personal careers.

Ferrazzi has been widely recognized by his peers, is a frequent contributor to CNN and CNBC, and has authored numerous articles for leading business publications, including Forbes, Inc, the Wall Street Journal and the Harvard Business Review. Ferrazzi was an early leader in the quality movement as the youngest examiner of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

My $.02: Think about Keith’s question and you will discover the ultimate secret of networking for the master himself.

First WHO?  Simply, who are the 250 most important people to making my dreams come true in 07?
Second, WHAT? What can I do for them?

Keith’s note accompanying the question: The second part is where folks get stuck, and what we call defining your currency.

I met Tony recently but immediately was fascinated by his work – combination of brilliant art and simple insights. You too will be fascinated if you visit Tony’s website. As a special, Tony was kind enough to send one of his drawings along with his question.

Tony Clark wears many hats. He is an artist, writer, speaker, and small business owner. Tony is also the producer and host of The Creative Venture, a weekly podcast designed to help creative people earn an income from their unique talents and gifts. Tony is the founder and principal consultant of EfficiencyLab, LLC – a software and Website renovation company. ACtually there are so many things that Tony does from his nest that it is impossible to list them here. Please read more about him here.

Optimist warning: Think about Tony’s question and you will realize that the best time to start something that you are passionate about was yesterday

Here’s Tony’s Quought for the Day

How many more right now’s are you going to spend waiting for someday?

Tony’s notes accompanying the question: We can spend too much time waiting for someday to pursue our passions. There’s no perfect time to follow your dreams, there’s only right now. And right now is as good a time as any.

Quought for the Day #20 – Kathy Sierra

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 29 Dec 2006, 10:15 PM - Leave Comment

I am a long-time fan of the blog Creating Passionate Users. So it is exciting to see that Kathy Sierra agreed to participate in the “Quought for the Day” project at short notice. Thanks Kathy.

Kathy Sierra has worked for the last decade in game development (Virgin MGM, Amblin’),interactive advertising (producer of Nestle’saward-winning Wonka.com), new media, artificial intelligence, and computer-based learning. Her most recent stint was as a “master trainer” for Sun Microsystems, and before that she spent several years developing and teaching the New Media and Interaction Design courses at UCLA Extension’s Entertainment Studies Department. She is the co-creator of O’Reilly’s bestselling Head First series (named to the Amazon Top Ten Computer Books for the last three years), and the original founder of javaranch.com, a programming community website with more than a half-million unique visitors each month

Optimist warning: Think about Kathy’s question and you will also quickly conclude that you should never take anything or anyone for granted.

Quought for the Day #18 – Dave Taylor

By Rajesh Setty on Thu 28 Dec 2006, 9:10 AM - Leave Comment

For starters, Dave Taylor wears many hats – author, blogger, teacher, geek, businessman and a great friend. When I watch Dave working on his dozen or so projects with same passion, I sometimes doubt if Dave is only one person or has he secretly mastered the human cloning project :)

Dave Taylor has been involved with the Internet since 1980 and is widely recognized as an expert on both technical and business issues. He has been published over a thousand times, launched four Internet-related startup companies, has written twenty business and technical books and holds both an MBA and MS Ed. Dave maintains three weblogs, The Intuitive Life Business Blog, focused on business and industry analysis, the eponymous Ask Dave Taylor devoted to tech and business Q&A and The Attachment Parenting Blog, discussing topics of interest to parents. Dave is an award-winning speaker, sought after conference and workshop participant and frequent guest on radio and podcast programs.

Optimist warning: Think about Dave’s question and you may start getting your priorities right.

Quought for the Day #17 – Rosa Say

By Rajesh Setty on Wed 27 Dec 2006, 11:58 PM - Leave Comment

Rosa Say was born and raised in Hawaii. She attended St. Anthony and Punahou schools, and she is a graduate of the School of Travel Industry Management at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She currently lives on the Big Island of Hawai‘i with her ‘Ohana (Family).

During her 24-year career in Hawaii’s hospitality industry, Rosa worked within the ranks of managers and leaders for Regent Hotels, Hyatt, Hilton, Sheraton, and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. She has served as a manager and leader on the opening teams of eight different hotel resorts in the Hawaiian Islands.

My $.02: Many of us want to do something good some day. That some day keeps getting postponed because we are “busy” with stuff now. Rosa’s question will be a wake up call for many of us.

Quought for the Day #16 – Brendon Connelly

By Rajesh Setty on Wed 27 Dec 2006, 10:08 PM - 1 Comment

Brendon Connelly maintains an awesome blog called SlackerManager. Don’t be misled by the name, though – it is definitely not for managers who are slackers :) If you want to be more effective at work without additional sweat, you have to visit Brendon’s blog. People who know Bren also know that he is always there to lend a helping hand whenever you need him. Thanks for everything in 2006 Bren!

Optimist Warning: Imagine watching your favorite game minus the scorecard. When you stop keeping score, the game gets boring. Or, may be not for millions of people who play the life of game without a scorecard. Brendon wants you to change that by answering this simple question.

(click on the button to read the background for this series)

Brendon’s Quought for the Day

Am I on the path?

Bren’s note accompanying the question: Just like project managers check their timelines and Gantt charts to evaluate progress against a goal, so should we all be checking our own progress as to our own destinations in life. This question assumes you’re already on the right path, which is a big assumption. What’s the path, you ask? The path is headed toward where you’re going. A particular job, a particular vacation goal, religious enlightenment, whatever. You decide where you’re going, but periodically check to be sure you’re on the path. Regardless of where you’re going, there will be many distractions along the way. Sometimes, when the path isn’t clearly marked, it can be very difficult to discern between distractions and roadsigns. Here’s your traveler’s tip of the day: the path is usually narrower than you’d expect. Good luck on your journey in 2007!

Quought for the Day #15 – Chris Cree

By Rajesh Setty on Wed 27 Dec 2006, 9:44 PM - Leave Comment

A former Naval officer, now Chris Cree is focused on helping businesses get leverage out of blogging. Chris has a nice series on Business Blogging for those who are getting started on Business Blogging (and the series serves as a refresher for those who have already started)

My $.02: The earlier question from Dr. Posner was related to identifying your legacy. Chris’ question will make you think about what you are going to do about your legacy this year.

(click on the button to read the background for this series)

Chris’ Quought for the Day

“What’s one way you can step outside yourself this year, start investing in other people, and begin building a lasting legacy for yourself?”

Chris’ note accompanying the question: From time to time we hear folks talking about wanting to leave a legacy when they depart this world. Too often they look to things or business to be those monuments. Unfortunately most things quickly fall into obscurity and their original meaning is lost. Even companies that long outlive their founders get bought out or change their names. But investing instead in people is a place where we really can make a lasting difference.

Quought for the Day #14 – Dr. Barry Posner

By Rajesh Setty on Wed 27 Dec 2006, 1:38 PM - Leave Comment

Dr. Barry Posner is one of my favorite authors on Leadership. I have thoroughly enjoyed the classic “The Leadership Challenge” by Barry Posner and Jim Kouzes. Their recent book “The Leader’s Legacy” was a treat. I was able to complete the book in one sitting but I am sure it will be on my table for the next few years. Being in Silicon Valley has its own perks. I got to meet Barry a few times and I am looking forward to more interactions in 2007.

Barry Z. Posner is the Dean of the Leavey School of Business and Professor of Leadership.  He assumed the Dean’s position in 1997, after having served previously as Managing Partner of the Executive Development Center, and Associate Dean, Graduate Programs.

Dr. Posner is an internationally renowned scholar in the area of leadership, as the co-author of seven books in this area, including the award winning and best-selling The Leadership Challenge.  He has published over 80 articles in both academic and practitioner-oriented journals and publications, and currently serves as Section Editor for the Journal of Management, and on the editorial review board of the Journal of Business Ethics.  Dr. Posner has consulted with organizations around the globe, and currently sits on the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the San Jose Repertory Theatre.

Barry’s Quought for the Day

“What will be your legacy?”

Notes on the same topic from their latest book “The Leader’s Legacy”:
Are you on this planet to do something, or are you herejust for something to do? If you’re on this planet to do something, then what is it? What difference will you make? What will be your legacy?

We pose these questions to first-year students in our leadership classes at Santa Clara University. It’s pretty heady stuff for eighteen-year-olds barely three months out of high school. Most adults haven’t thought seriously enough about these questions. We don’t expect our students to have ready responses. We just believe that they ought to be thinking about what their legacies will be – not only as they begin their college careers but throughout all the days of their lives.

Quought for the Day #13 – Mike Sansone

By Rajesh Setty on Tue 26 Dec 2006, 10:20 PM - 3 Comments

Mike and I have never spoken to each other but have exchanged several emails in the past year. Mike’s blog is a treasure chest of wonderful information. Thanks Mike for everything you have done in 2006.

Mike Sansone is an independent business consultant specializing in business blogs and conversational copywriting.

Prior to starting his own business, Mike helped to build thriving online communities with America Online, Real Fans Sports Network, Ignite Sports Media and HeyMax. He also has coordinated the growth of offline communities as a property manager, volunteer, and minister.

My $.02: Think about Mike’s question every time you meet a new person with whom you want to build a relationship with. You will see that it is easier to get close to people when you think about what you can do for them than the other way around.

(click on the button to read the background for this series)

Here’s Mike’s Quought for the Day

“How can I help others reach a level of success greater than my own?”

Mike’s note accompanying the question: The word ‘success’ probably could be replaced with many words such as achievement, connectivity, productivity, knowledge, etc.
