Quought for the Day #12 – Rick Cockrum

By Rajesh Setty on Tue 26 Dec 2006, 9:52 PM - 1 Comment

Talk about variety – Rick Cockrum wears many hats. Rick runs a software company which develops software for personal effectiveness. He is a philosopher. He and his wife operate a single screen theater and best of all, he runs a personal development blog (which is almost a collection of his articles) where he writes on variety of topics.

Rick sent a question that is so timely and provides a new perspective on planning for your new year.

Optimist warning: Once you read this question, either you are thinking or you are lying that you are not thinking :)

Here’s Rick’s Quought for the Day

“In twenty years, what do you want to remember?”

Rick’s note accompanying the question: The point of the question is that in setting goals, we look at the next day, week, year, 5 years, lifetime. I want to turn the question around. Often people look differently at the importance of what they’re planning if they think of remembering it, rather than trying to do it.

Quought for the Day #11 – Ajit Nazre

By Rajesh Setty on Tue 26 Dec 2006, 11:56 AM - Leave Comment

I met Ajit a few months ago where he was speaking on a panel. Ajit had some great insights to share. What also stood out was his academic credentials and professional achievements. He is definitely an inspiration to many young professionals.

Ajit joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 2003. His areas of investment include enterprise software and services, material science pertinent to energy, environment and life sciences.

Before joining KPCB, Ajit was with SAP for 5 years. At SAP, he worked for Dr. Hasso Plattner, CEO, Chairman and co-founder, SAP. Ajit played a key role in formulating and executing SAP’s internet strategy (mySAP.com). He co-founded SAPMarkets, a fully owned company of SAP, focusing on Marketplace applications and technology. As the Managing Director of SAPMarkets Americas, Ajit grew the business to $100 million in six quarters. In 2002, he laid the foundation for SAP Inspire, SAP’s New Venture Unit.

Optimist Warning: I hope many more people will take Ajit’s question to heart. It covers a VERY important issue.

Quought for the Day #10 – Liz Strauss

By Rajesh Setty on Tue 26 Dec 2006, 12:05 AM - 3 Comments

Recently Liz asked me whether I am intersted in being interviewed for her blog. I said ‘Yes’ without knowing clearly what I was signing up for. She asked only five questions and three of those five questions made me think for more than day. Liz can make you think.  Thanks Liz. I am glad to have met you.

ME “Liz” Strauss has worked over 20 years in print, software, and online publishing. As VP and Publisher for an American textbook company, Liz developed products and strategic plans with publishers in Europe, Australia, the UK, and Ireland. She has worked small companies making acquisitions, companies in crisis, and corporate giants such as Pearson, Reed Elsevier, and Wolters Kluwer. Her expertise extends from product development and marketing into business-startups and long-term strategic planning.

Optimist warning: Think about this question for a minute and you may make someone’s day by “really” listening to them.

“In this time of  continuous partial attention, how will you show people that you are truly listening, and what will you be actively listening to find out?”

Quought for the Day #09 – Peter Block

By Rajesh Setty on Mon 25 Dec 2006, 9:33 PM - Leave Comment

Today is special for me. It has been 97 weeks or 679 days since I started blogging and this happens to be my 700th post. Yes, I do keep count of this as this is serious business for me. I started blogging on Valentine’s Day of 2005 and I happen to write my 700th post on the day of Christmas.

Once again, thanks to all the long-time readers and a warm welcome to the new readers.

As the new year approaches, I am grappling with a dilemma as to what opportunities to pick up and what opportunities to drop and move on. I am sure many of you are sorting out your plans as well. So I picked up a question that Peter Block kindly sent for this series. This, I thought was timely and relevant.

Peter is the author of several best-selling books. The most widely known are Flawless Consulting: A Guide to Getting Your Expertise Used (1st edition 1980, 2nd edition 1999); Stewardship: Choosing Service Over Self-Interest (1993) and The Empowered Manager: Positive Political Skills at Work (1987). Peter is the recipient of the first place 2004 Members’ Choice Award by the Organization Development Network, which recognized Flawless Consulting as the most influential book for OD practitioners over the past 40 years.

Quought for the Day #08 – Steve Shapiro

By Rajesh Setty on Sun 24 Dec 2006, 9:41 PM - Leave Comment

I met Steve a few years ago and have enjoyed every conversation with him. His latest book “Goal Free Living: How to Have the Life You Want Now” became the #1 Amazon.com “Business Motivation” and #1 BarnesandNoble.com “Self-Improvement” best seller. He is working on his own TV show that will be launched soon.

Steve’s Quought for the Day

What is your “theme” for 2007?

Steve’s note: A theme is very different than the traditional goal-based New Year’s Resolution (e.g., lose 15 pounds, run a marathon, quit smoking).  Your theme is one or two words that gets your juices flowing, has you excited, and moves you into action. Themes can be anything from passion, peace, or love to friendship, travel, or self-expression.

Quought for the Day #07 – Heidi Roizen

By Rajesh Setty on Sun 24 Dec 2006, 7:05 PM - Leave Comment

Heidi Roizen needs no introduction in the VC community and beyond. She is one of the managing directors of Mobius VC. Heidi serves on the boards of multiple companies as well as the National Venture Capital Association. Occasionally she serves as a guest lecturer on entrepreneurship at Stanford University.

Unfortunately most people don’t enjoy what they are doing. If you are one of them, you got to read this quought.

Quought for the Day #06 – Mark Goulston

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 22 Dec 2006, 9:54 PM - Leave Comment

Dr. Mark Goulston is an emotional intelligence specialist who helps people “get out of their own way.” I got introduced to Mark recently and quickly realized that I had missed a lot of things. I have started to catch up on Mark’s wonderful work in this area but going at this rate, I know I will have a long way to go. I am glad to have been introduced to Mark and his work.

My$.02: Thinking about this question might leave you with a new meaning for net worth.

Quought for the Day #04 – Phil Gerbyshak

By Rajesh Setty on Fri 22 Dec 2006, 9:01 AM - Leave Comment

Phil Gerbyshak is a popular blogger, author and a manager but more than anything he is a giver and someone everyone would want to be friends with. If you are his friend, the only problem will be that you have to work very hard to reciprocate (but you may still fail to catch up)
